AUTO THEFT

Auto theft has become a major crime problem in Albuquerque this year, and it has not left our neighborhood untouched.  Some are presumably being stolen by organized theft rings; others are quickly traded for drugs or used in other crimes and later abandoned.

APD and BCSO are teaming up with car dealers, insurance companies, the public, and others to attack the problem.  As with many crime problems, the first – and most effective – line of defense is prevention.

Here are some tips that everyone should follow to reduce the chance of being victimized.

First and foremost, use your garage whenever possible.  You may have to clear clutter or reorganize your storage, but a car which is not easily accessible is also the safest.

Never leave keys in your car, whether it’s locked or not.  The weather has turned cold, and many people feel the need to warm up their cars in the morning.  This not only wastes expensive gasoline and contributes to winter morning air pollution; it makes it dreadfully easy and quick for someone to take your car, even if locked.  The addict who wants to trade your car for meth doesn’t much care if he has to break a window to get it.  It’s not fun to get into a cold car in the morning, but it’s less enjoyable to stand in the cold trying to figure out where it went.

Install and use theft prevention devices.  An alarm system or a “club” may protect your car, especially when an unprotected car is nearby.    These will also help to safeguard your car when you’re at work, shopping, or out for the evening.

Heavy-duty pickup trucks are a very popular target right now.  If you own one of these vehicles, it is especially critical that you take every possible prevention measure.

Particularly with the holiday season upon us, it is vital to remember not to leave any valuables in plain sight or easy access in your car.  It may not be stolen, but you are inviting a burglar to help himself to whatever is there.
